Biographical History
The Portsmouth was under Commander John B. Montgomery and sailed chiefly on the coasts of Mexico and California.
U.S. naval vessel launched at the Portsmouth, N.H., navy yard in 1843 and commissioned in 1844; wooden sloop of war; 1,022 tons; struck from the navy list in 1915 and subsequently sold.
Wooden sloop-of-war; launched 23 Oct. 1843; commissioned 10 Nov. 1844; saw action in Mexican War; 1849-1851 patroling with Royal Navy to supress slave trade; 1856-1858 sailed in Pacific to China; 1859-1861 tour of African coast; Civil War action in Gulf of Mexico; quarantine vessel at New York, 1866-1867; cruised off Brazil and Africa, 1869-1871; survey assign. in Pacific, 1873-1874; decommissioned 14 July 1878; became training ship with naval apprentices, 1878-1915; then with New Jersey Militia 1898-1911; loaned to Maine Hospital Service, Hampton Roads; struck from Navy list 17 Apr. 1915 and sold; burned at Governors Island, Boston Harbor, Sept. 1915.
