Biographical History
The Pennsylvania Freedmen's Relief Association was established on Mar. 5, 1862 to provide relief to freed slaves during the American Civil War. Following the war, the organization focused on educating former slaves by providing funding for teachers. They also provided clothing and food for destitute pupils and school equipment in the form of books, slates, and maps.
