Biographical History
Scottish mining prospector trained in metallurgy at the University of Edinburgh, who between 1880 and his death in 1894 lived with or near Hopi Indian trader Thomas V. Keam and studied Hopi civilization. In 1884 Stephen compiled a catalog of the ceramics in Keam's collection of Hopi artifacts. He later served as field director to the Second Hemenway Expedition to the American Southwest, which from 1890 to 1894 investigated the folklore and customs of the Hopi Indians and which in 1892 purchased the Keam Collection for $10,000.
