Alanson Hinman came to the Oregon Country in 1844 and taught school at the Whitman Mission. He later moved to the Willamette Valley, was collector of customs at Astoria, and finally settled in Forest Grove. He was a trustee of Pacific University.
Alanson Hinman (1822-1908), went to Oregon in 1844 and worked as a teacher in the Whitman Mission. He settled in Forest Grove in the Willamette Valley, and engaged in the mercantile business. He suffered financial loss in 1860 and went to the Idaho mines to repair his fortunes. From 1867-1873 he was customs collector at Astoria and then returned to Forest Grove for the rest of his life.
