Biographical History

Elizabeth Woodbridge Phelps Pearsall Resse was the daughter of Mrs. Elizabeth B. Phelps, who was active in the early club movement. The Revolution, the paper for which Susan B. Anthony was business manager, was for a time printed at Mrs. Phelp's house. Her daughter was first married to Robert W. Pearsall and started the first agricultural school for girls in this country on her Long Island estate. Sometime before 1879 she married Count Pio Resse of Rome. In Rome and Florence Elizabeth did much work in the tenement districts and was active in many philanthropic social movements. She was also a composer and was close friends with Rubinstein, Liszt, and other musicians.
