Biographical History
Dr. Thomas J. Charlton II (1833-1886) graduated from the Savannah Medical College in 1856. In 1857, he was appointed as a surgeon in the United States Navy. He married Julia Crane (1837-1882) in 1860. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Charlton resigned his commission and joined the Confederate States Navy, serving aboard the commerce raider Florida. He had nine children, including Tattnall Charlton and Dr. Thomas J. Charlton III (1863-1920) Dr. Thomas J. Charlton III was a prominent medical practitioner in Savannah. He married Wilhelmina Stuart Howell in 1887. Charlton III was very active in public affairs, serving ion the Board of Chatham County Commissioners from 1893 to 1897, and helping initiate the development of a public road system in the county. He also served on the Board of Education and was a member of both the Georgia Historical Society and the Savannah Public Library Board. At the time of his death in 1920, he was serving on the staff of St. Joseph Hospital. Charlton III had one son, Dr. Thomas J. Charlton IV (1895-1955) and one daughter, Catherine Howell Charlton (1893-1952), who was Society Editor for the Savannah Morning News.
