Professor and Hebrew language specialist.
Thomas J. Conant (1802-1891) was a prominent biblical scholar. After graduating from Middlebury College in Middlebury, VT, he held professorial appointments at several institutions, including Hamilton Literary and Theological Seminary and Rochester Theological Seminary in Hamilton and Rochester, N.Y., respectively. From 1857 to 1875, Conant was responsible for revising the common English language edition of the Bible, a position to which he had been appointed by the American Bible Union. Conant resided at 187 Washington Street in Brooklyn, N.Y. with his wife, Hannah O'Brien Chaplin, and seven children. A son, S.S. Conant, was editor of the periodical Harper's Weekly .
