The Derwent Bank, established in 1828, was financed by English and Indian capitalists and became famous as a land mortgage bank under the management of Charles Swanston. It became insolvent in 1849 and finally closed in 1854.
The Derwent Bank Company was established in Tasmania in 1828. The Melbourne agency was opened by William Rucker, a Melbourne storekeeper in Feb. 1838 and was closed in June 1839.
Derwent Bank was formed in 1827 by a group of prominent Tasmanian citizens, and under the management of Charles Swanston it was closely involved with the Port Phillip Association. It went into liquidation in 1850.
