Biographical History

Thomas Aloysius Dornin (1800-1874), a United States naval officers. Dornin, born in Ireland, was educated at St. Mary's College in Baltimore and entered the Navy in 1815. In 1826, he was promoted to Lieutenant and in 1841, to commander. In 1860, as the commander of the screw frigate San Jacinto, he served with Africa Squadron, a United States Navy's unit established for the purpose of combatting international slave trade. He seized several slavers, landed the slaves in Liberia, and sent the captured vessels to Norfolk, Va. In September 1861, he was relieved and returned to the United States onboard of the USS Consellation. Although retired as a commodore in 1862, Dornin commanded the naval station at Baltimore till the end of the war.
