Biographical History

Social work education was first initiated at the University of Minnesota in 1917 via the Training Course for Social and Civic Work program within the department of sociology. The program consisted of five years of course work, resulting in a Master's degree, with the first awarded to Mary Agnes Meier in 1918. The School of Social Work was officially established in 1942, awarding a master's level degree, while an undergraduate degree could be obtained through the department of sociology. In the early 1980s, the undergraduate program was eliminated when the School was moved from the College of Liberal Arts to the College of Home Economics (now the College of Human Ecology).
