Biographical History
Political leader, governor of Vermont. Graduated from Harvard in 1790. Member of U.S. House of Representatives, 1817-1825. Elected governor of Vermont in 1828, serving until 1831. Served as United States Senator, 1842-1843. Lived most of his life in Craftsbury, Vt.
Samuel Chandler Crafts was born in Woodstock, Connecticut on October 6, 1768, son of Colonel Ebenezer Crafts. He graduated from Harvard University in 1790 and settled in Craftsbury in 1791. He was elected town clerk in 1799 and served until March, 1829. He held many other public offices, including member of the U.S. House of Representatives, 1817-1825; Governor of the State of Vermont, 1828-1831, and U.S. Senator, 1842-1843. He died November 9, 1853.
