Biographical History
Virgil Seth Lagomarcino was born to John and Cora Scott Lagomarcino on March 23, 1921, in Plainfield, Iowa. He received his B.A. (1943) in political science from Coe College, M.S. (1948) in education administration from Drake University, and Ph.D. (1955) in education from Iowa State College (University).
Lagomarcino began his career as a teacher (1943-1945) as the instructor of economics and government at the high school in Vinton, Iowa. He became the Superintendent (1945-1949) of the Keystone (Iowa) Consolidated Schools and Superintendent (1949-1951) of Anamosa (Iowa) Public Schools. Later, he was a Regional Consultant (1951-1953) for the Iowa Department of Public Instruction. Lagomarcino worked as a Research Assistant (1953-1954) in the Department of Vocational Education at Iowa State University. He returned to the Iowa Department of Public Instruction (1954-1955) as the Director of Curriculum and Supervision and Director of Public Junior Colleges. He joined the faculty at Iowa State as an Assistant Professor (1955-1957) in the Department of Vocational Education and was promoted to Associate Professor (1957-1959) and Professor (1959-1990). Lagomarcino was named Director (1961-1968) of Teacher Education at Iowa State University; he later became the first Dean (1968-1990) of the College of Education (the College of Human Sciences as of 2005). Upon his retirement in 1990, he was made Professor Emeritus.
Dr. Lagomarcino married Neva Dorothy Baird and they have three children, Mary, Mark, and Martha. He passed away July 21, 2009.
