Biographical History

The Francis P. Garvan-John M. Olin Medal is awarded annually by the American Chemical Society to recognize distinguished service to chemistry by women chemists.

Originally known as the Garvan Medal, the award was established in 1936 through a donation from Francis P. Garvan, and the first Garvan Medal was presented to Emma P. Carr in 1937. The second and third medals were awarded in 1940 and 1942. Since 1946, the medal has been awarded annually.

From 1979 to 1983, the award was sponsored by W. R. Grace and Company. Since 1984, the Garvan-Olin Medal has been sponsored by the Olin Corporation.
