Thor Merritt Smith (1906-1980) was born in Reno, Nevada, and was a 1927 graduate from the University of Nevada. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as Chief of U.S. Press Policy Section and Public Relations Representative at the SHAEF (Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force) Advance Command Post. From 1952 to 1959, Smith served as Vice-President and Director of Publisher Services of The American Weekly in New York, and from 1960 to 1961 served as Assistant to the Publisher of the Santa Barbara News-Press. From 1962 to 1964, he was Executive Vice-President and General Manager of the San Francisco Convention and Visitors Bureau, and from 1965 to 1972 served as Vice-President and Associate Director of Development for Mills College in Oakland, California. Smith retired in 1972.
