Biographical History

Harry Innes Todd was born in 1818 to John H. Todd and Maria Innes Todd, daughter of Judge Harry Innes, an early Frankfort settler and the first Judge of the United States Court for the District of Kentucky. After the death of John Todd, Maria Todd married John J. Crittenden, the prominent Kentucky Senator and governor. Harry Todd became first a steamboat clerk and then a captain on boats travelling on the Kentucky, Ohio, and Mississippi Rivers for many years. Captain Todd left steamboating in 1849 to devote his full time to business interests. Todd also pursued a political career, winning election as Franklin County sheriff, lessee of the state penitentiary, state representative, and Frankfort city councilman. Todd died in May, 1891, from injuries suffered when struck by a horse and wagon on a Frankfort street. One of his sons, George Davidson Todd, became mayor of Louisville in 1896 when the city council elected him to fill the unexpired term of Mayor Henry Tyler who died in office. George Todd began his business career in Louisville as a bookkeeper for W. B. Belknap & Co. In 1880 he went into business as an organizer and vice-president of the Todd-Donigan Iron Co. He later became president of the Kentucky Machinery Co. Todd also served as secretary and treasurer of the Heavy Hardware Jobbers' National Union.
