Biographical History

Annual student-organized festival and open-house held each spring. The first VEISHEA took place in 1922. It was a consolidation of the divisional (divisions later became colleges) celebrations at Iowa State which included May Day, St. Patrick's Day, and the Ag Carnival as well as the night shows and open houses for all divisions: Agriculture, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Home Economics, and Industrial Science. By combining these various activities into one, students missed fewer classes. The name evolved from the Divisions: V for Veterinary Medicine, E for Engineering, IS for Industrial Science, HE for Home Economics, and A for Agriculture and was created by Frank Paine, an electrical engineering professor who eventually became head of the Industrial Engineering Dept. (1929-1942). The resulting purpose of VEISHEA was, "to develop the spirit of unity between Iowa State College and Iowa people, unity between Ames and high school students, unity between the alumni and students, unity between the students of the five divisions.
