Biographical History

Thomas Birch was a marine, landscape, portrait, and miniature painter. The son of artist William Russell Birch, he was born in England in 1799 and emigrated to Philadelphia with his father in 1794. The two worked together as William Birch & Son until 1800, designing, engraving, and publishing views of Philadelphia. Thomas Birch continued to work in Philadelphia until his death in 1851. He exhibited his work in many locations and was an honorary member of the National Academy. Birch is especially noted for his marine and winter scenes and his paintings of the naval battles of the War of 1812.
