Biographical History

Mr. Reid, director of the planning division of SEMCOG at the time of his retirement in 1972, as born in Rochester, Indiana, on July 30, 1902. After receiving a B.A. from DePaul University in 1927 and a B.D. from Union Theological Seminary in 1932, Reid spent a year on a fellowship at the London School of Economics and than did a year of graduate work at Columbia. Subsequently, he worked for several years in adult education and historical research. Upon completion of service in the army during World War II, he worked as a social economist for the Michigan State Planning Commission. In 1948 he moved to the Detroit Metropolitan Area Regional Planning Commission and in 1956 became executive director of the agency. He assumed his position with SOG when that agency was created in 1968. Reid, member of several committees and planning organizations, including the American Institute of Planners, died while visiting his daughter in California on December 6, 1976.
