Biographical History

Attorney. Educated at St. Johns College (Md.) and at Jefferson Law College (Md.). Admitted to Maryland Bar (1840). Came to California (1850) and was hired as legal counsel by Charles M. Weber, founder of Stockton (1851). Practiced law in Stockton (1851-1906). Kept transcripts and briefs of cases in which he and his colleagues were involved. Many cases involve land disputes. Most important litigations in which Hall took part were People vs. Las Mariposas Estate (Fremont Grant) (1866-1868) and Stockton and Visalia Railroad vs. City of Stockton (1870). Briefs in collection written by attorneys other than John B. Hall include those by J.H. Budd and David S. Terry.
