The Society of Friends, or Quakers, established the first meeting in Indiana in 1809. The Ohio Valley Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends was first known as the Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends (Hicksite), 1828-1900, then as the Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends, General Conference, 1900-1975. Friends General Conference is the term that replaced Hicksite. The Ohio Valley Yearly Meeting has many subordinate meetings in Indiana.
The Society of Friends, or Quakers, is a religious sect founded by George Fox in England in 1647. The first Quaker meetings were established in America in the late 17th century, and the first meeting was established in Indiana in 1809. During the first half of the 19th century, Quakers were among the leading opponents of slavery in the United States.
