Biographical History
The Department of Engineering offered a degree program in architectural engineering in 1912; this was followed by the creation of the Department of Architecture in 1933. The School of Architecture was established on July 1, 1958; with its name changed to the College of Architecture in 1971. The Charles E. Daniel Center for Building Research and Urban Studies was created in 1973, in Genoa, Italy; followed by the creation, in 1988, of the Clemson University College of Architecture Center at the College of Charleston, Charleston, SC. Rudolph E. Lee was Department Head from 1933-1948; followed by John Hobart Gates from 1948-1954; and Harlan E. McClure from 1955-1958. Harlan E. McClure served as the Dean of the School of Architecture from 1958-1984; followed by Lamar H. Brown, served as acting Dean in 1984; Paul David Pearson was Dean from 1984-1986; followed by James Frazier Barker from 1986-1999.
