Biographical History

Born in Philadelphia, Huneker studied piano in Philadelphia and Paris. After moving to New York in 1886, he continued to study piano, became a member of the piano faculty of the National Conservatory of Music, and had a successful career as an arts critic and essayist.

James Huneker was a popular and erudite critic who wrote on music and other topics, especially drama and literature. Born in Philadelphia, he studied piano, later became a teacher, and began to publish articles and criticism in various New York periodicals. His style was quite accessible and popular, as he approached his subjects from an aesthetic rather than academic perspective. He helped popularize contemporary European artists in America, wrote several nonfiction works, and published one novel and several collections of short fiction.
