Educator, author, and outdoor sportsman; born 6 Mar. 1898, Appomattox, Va., son of H.C. and Blanche Moore Babcock; Bachelor of Arts, 1918, and Bachelor of Philosophy, 1919, from Elon College, Elon, N.C.; M.A. from University of Virginia; doctorate, 1927, from USC; married, 1919, Alice Hudson Cheatham; taught English at Elon College and Journalism at College of William and Mary prior to joining faculty of USC in 1927; died, 10 Dec. 1964, in Columbia, S.C.
Served in the following capacities at USC: associate professor of English, 1927-1929, Director of Extension, 1927-1937, professor of English, 1929-1964, head of the Division of English Literature, 1935-1939, and head of the department of English until his retirement, 1939-1964.
