Biographical History

Deputy Attorney General.

William Pierce Rogers was born on June 23, 1913 in Norfolk, New York. He received an A.B. from Colgate University in 1934, and an LL.B. from Cornell University in 1937. He was admitted to the New York bar in 1937 and the District of Columbia bar in 1950. He was the assistant district attorney for New York County from 1938 to 1942, and from 1946 to 1947. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1946. In 1947 he was chief counsel for the U.S. Senate War Investigating Committee, and from 1947 to 1948 he served as chief counsel for the Truman Committee, U.S. Senate War Investigating Committee. He also served as chief counsel for the U.S. Senate Investigations Sub-Committee Executive Expenditures Committee, 1948 to 1950. In 1950 he returned to private law practice with the firm Dwight, Royall, Harris, Koegel & Caskey in New York and Washington, 1950 to 1953. On January 28, 1953 he was sworn in as Deputy Attorney General, and served in this position until the resignation of Attorney General Herbert Brownell in October 1957. As Deputy Attorney General, he served on the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service Committee, the Government Contract Committee, and as the Special Presidential Representative to the Independence Ceremonies of Togo, Africa. Rogers was also very active in the political campaigns of 1952 and 1956, accompanying Richard Nixon as one of his chief political advisers. In October 1957, President Eisenhower selected Rogers as his new Attorney General. He was sworn in on November 8, 1957. Rogers resigned from his office on January 21, 1961. He once again returned to private law practice, as a partner in the firm Royall, Koegel, Rogers & Wells, 1961 to 1969. He served as Secretary of State from 1969 to 1973, under President Nixon. In 1973 he became a senior partner in the firm Rogers & Wells. He died on January 2, 2001.
