Biographical History

Roger Kinney Warlick was born in San Diego, California on October 1, 1930 to John Portland Warlick and Bernice Catherine Johnson Warlick. Following graduation from high school in 1948, Warlick served in the U. S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955. He received a B.A. in sociology/anthropology from Arizona State University in 1957, then attended Boston University where he studied history with a concentration on early modern Europe. After graduating with a Ph.D. in 1965, Warlick became Assistant Professor at Bentley College in Waltham, Massachusetts and began his career teaching primarily Western civilization and European history courses. During this time, Warlick also served as Parish Historian for Trinity Episcopal Church in Boston. In 1970, Warlick moved to Savannah to take the position of Professor of History and Department Head at Armstrong State College (now Armstrong Atlantic State University). In 1993 he also became Assistant Dean for the School of the Arts. Throughout his career, Warlick=s interests developed towards local history, religious history, and music. As one of the leaders in history education in Savannah, Warlick became active in such organizations as the vestry of Christ Church, the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia, the Georgia Historical Society (where he served as president 1990-1994), the Historic Savannah Foundation, the Park and Tree Commission, and the Savannah Symphony Society. He was active as an educator both through academic courses and informal community lectures. In 1987, Warlick published As Grain Once Scattered: A 250th Anniversary History of Christ Church. Warlick retired in 1994, although he continued to be active in various local organizations until his death on November 28, 1998. Warlick married Claudette Lee Evans in 1953. This marriage produced four daughters: Kathryn, Dawn, Sarah, and Amy. Warlick married a second time in 1973 to Lorraine Mae VandenBout Holwerda. Lorraine Warlick brought three children to the marriage: David, Andrea, and Elizabeth Holwerda.
