Biographical History

Henry Lewis Stimson, the politician, was one of Eleanor Stimson Brooks's cousins. He took an interest in the family and had given her support throughout Van Wyck's struggles with depression (1926-1930).

Henry Stimson was a lawyer and U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York from 1906-1909. He served as Secretary of War under William Howard Taft, and was a special emissary to Nicaragua in 1927. Stimson was Governor General of the Philippines from 1927-1929. He was Secretary of State under Herbert Hoover, and was Secretary of War under Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry Truman.
