South Carolina Revolutionary War soldier, U.S. commissioner negotiating with the southern Indians, 1785-1802.
Mrs. Alice Noble Waring of Hughes, Arkansas, great-great-great granddaughter of General Andrew Pickens, collected photostatic copies of original correspondence, documents, and papers which she used in writing The Fighting Elder: Andrew Pickens, 1739-1817, published in 1962. These copies were acquired from major research libraries, including the Library of Congress, the State Historical Society of Wisconsin (Draper Collection), William L. Clement Library, the Huntington Library, Duke University, and the New York Public Library. Mrs. Waring owned some originals, and she donated the original deed of Tamassee to the South Caroliniana Library, Columbia, South Carolina.
General in Continental Army during American Revolutionary War, and later politician of Ninety Six District (S.C.)
General Andrew Pickens (1739-1817), South Carolina soldier and legislator. In 1785-1897, he served on a number of federal commissions appointed by the Congress and the President to negotiate with the Cherokee and Creek Indians, particularly in relation to conflicts on the Georgia border. The commissions negotiated treaties of Hopewell (1786), New York (1790), Holson (1791) and Coleraine (1797).
