Biographical History

Oscar Montgomery Hansen (1907-1971) was a graduate of both the University of Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh. On June 23, 1936, he married Helen Wilhelmina Kimker at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Savannah. They eventually had two sons: Oscar Montgomery and John Paul Hansen. At the time of his marriage, Hansen was working for Savannah architect Cletus W. Bergen. By 1947, Hansen had his own architecture practice in Savannah. During his career, he designed Memorial Stadium, the fine arts and science buildings at Savannah State University, and the Armstrong Atlantic State University campus. He also directed the Chatham County public school building program from 1950 until 1971. Hansen was a director of the Southern Savings and Loan Company and served as a deacon at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension. HE was a member of many organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, the Quarterback Club, the Chatham Club, and the Savannah yacht Club. Born to Danish parents, Hansen was also a member of the Danish Society. In 1953, Hansen began serving as the vice consul of Denmark in Savannah. In recognition for his service as vice consul, he was knighted by the King of Denmark in 1964. Oscar M. Hansen died I September of 1971; he is buried I Greenwich Cemetery.
