Sir Henry Maximilian Beerbohm (1872-1956), caricaturist and writer, studied classics at Merton College, Oxford, where he became friends with Oscar Wilde, art critic Robert Ross, Lord Alfred Douglas, and the novelist Reggie Turner. From 1898 to 1910 he was drama critic for the Saturday Review, on the recommendation of his predecessor, George Bernard Shaw. Well known as an essayist, in 1911 he published his only novel, Zuleika Dobson; but his reputation as a caricaturist was even greater than that as an essayist. He died at Rapallo, Italy, on 20 May 1956.
Max Beerbohm was a key figure in turn-of-the-century London's literary scene, along with fellow avant-garde aesthetes Yeats, Beardsley, and Wilde. His reputation for wit and style was unmatched, and he produced numerous popular stories and endless caricatures and drawings, many lampooning prominent Victorian personalities. He also was a drama critic, and gave popular radio broadcasts during World War I. After retiring to Italy, he wrote succesfully in many genres, always suffused with unmistakable humor.
