Biographical History
Robert Roeschlaub was born in Munich, Bavaria on July 6, 1843. In 1845, he emigrated with his parents to America where the family settled in Quincy, Ill. Roeschlaub participated in the American Civil War as a soldier with the 84th Ill. Infantry. After the war, he began his architectural training with Robert Bunce before following his father west to Colo. Territory in 1873 and later became known as the "first trained" architect in Denver. Roeschlaub designed many of the city's early schools, libraries, churches, residences and business blocks as well as other important structures throughout the state, such as the Central City Opera House, Central City, Colo. He was also a curator with the Colorado Historical Society and a member of the American Institute of Architects. In 1909, when architects in Colo. were required by law to become licensed by the state, Roeschlaub received license #1. Blind in later life, he died October 25, 1923 in San Diego, Calif. Roeschlaub is buried in Denver at Fairmont Cemetery.
