Biographical History

Harding & Cogswell, Inc. (later renamed Harding & Cogswell, Corp.) began as a limestone fabrication company in Ellettsville, Indiana. It was founded in 1911 by Alfred G. Harding and Percy Cogswell. The company was incorporated in 1921. Although it was a very successful company it was temporarily shut down during World War II. The company continued in business after the war and during the 1950s Glen Summitt and William G. Cogswell (nephew of the founder) formed a separate company (Summitt & Cogswell) in Stinesville, Indiana. In 1965, Glen Summitt became president of the company. Upon the death of Glen Summitt in 1968 his son, F.G. Summitt, became president. In October of 1973 both the Ellettsville and Stinesville operations were shut down and a new company in partnership with Larry Evans of Bedford, Indiana was opened. This new company was actually two companies, one for sales and promotions (Harding & Cogswell, Corp.) and the other for fabrication (Summitt and Evans, Inc.). Soon after this change, the company became the second-largest supplier of Indiana limestone, and the largest supplier of textured panel wall systems in the United States. Limestone fabricated by the company can be found in buildings throughout the United States. On 31 March 1998, F.G. Summitt, the president of Harding & Cogswell retired and shut down the operations of the company. Its final contracts were fabricated by the newly formed, Evans Limestone Company, of Bedford, Indiana.
