Biographical History

Andrew Stevenson Low, Jr. (b. 1917, Westerly, R.I.), U.S. Air Force officer, served in the Rhode Island National Guard before entering West Point. He received his commission in 1942 and completed pilot and combat crew training shortly thereafter. He arrived in England in 1944 with the 453rd Bombardment Group serving as assistant group operations officer, and later as squadron commander and group operations officer. He was shot down over Germany on his 16th combat mission and spent the remainder of the War in a hospital and prison camp. In 1951 he served as executive officer to the director of operations, Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters, and was later transferred to Paris, France as the SAC representative at Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers Europe. From 1965 to 1967, General Low was chief, Air Force Section, U.S. Military Mission for Aid to Turkey. Beginning in 1969, he was director of aerospace programs, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Programs and Resources, Air Force Headquarters. He retired in 1971.
