Biographical History
Architectural firm in York, Pa., founded by John Augustus Dempwolf who was born in Germany and studied architecture at the Cooper Union Institute in New York during the 1870s, later working in Boston and finally moving to York, Pa. He was joined by his brother Reinhart Dempwolf and later his son Frederick Dempwolf. In their hands some of York's finer structures were realized. Many of the buildings they designed still stand; however some of their most prominent works: the York City Market and York Collegiate Institute gave way under the wrecking ball. During the firm's active period (1874-1920) over 600 buildings were designed, leaving a lasting effect on York's architecture.
