Outstanding American Field Commander of World War II.
George S. (George Smith) Patton (1885-1945) was born on November 11, 1885 in San Gabriel, California. He graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1909 and began his career in the United States Army. In 1917, Patton went with John J. (John Joseph) Pershing (1860-1948) and the American Expeditionary Forces to France. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and from the Army War College. After two tours in Hawaii, Patton was assigned to the 2nd Armored Brigade stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. Shortly thereafter he was given command of the entire 2nd Armored Division. In 1942 he was assigned to create the Desert Training Corps. He assumed the command of the United States 3rd Army in 1944. Patton and the 3rd Army proceeded from Normandy, France, fighting in four directions at once. They fought at the Battle of the Ardennes, 1944-1945, and were instrumental in liberating France from German occupation.
