He wrote or compiled over twenty books about prints, book collecting, and the book arts with emphasis on the era of George Washington and on New York City.
Sidney Lawton Smith (1845-1929) became a designer, etcher, engraver, and book-plate artist after studying with several notable engravers of the mid-nineteenth century in Boston and New York City. He settled in Canton, Mass., until 1893 when he moved his family and business to Boston. Smith also became widely known for his church decoration and stained-glass work.
