John Smith ( -1859) was born in West Boylston, Mass., but moved first to Shirley and then to Barre, Mass., where, with Joseph Fobes, he formed the partnership that resulted in the Barre Village general store of Smith and Fobes. Smith later founded the mills and village of Smithville in Barre. In 1825, he married Clarissa Worcester ( - ) of West Boylston, by whom he had two sons: Charles Worcester Smith (1828-1882) and J. Edwin Smith ( - ).

Joseph Fobes (1811-1877), eldest son of Perez Fobes and Alice Stone Fobes, was born in Oakham, Mass., and was a merchant, mainly in Barre and Oakham, Mass. He withdrew entirely from the mercantile world in 1841 and spent the rest of his life in agriculture and raising cattle. Fobes represented Oakham in the Massachusetts General Court during 1875. In 1836, he married Nancy Burt ( - ), daughter of Eli Burt of Oakham; all their children died in infancy or young adulthood.
