Biographical History
The College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (PAMS) was established at North Carolina State University in 1960 as the School of Physical Science and Applied Mathematics. In 1977, the unit was renamed the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, and adopted its current name in 1987.
In 1960, the departments of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and Experimental Statistics joined to form the School of Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics. In 1965, the Dept. of Biochemistry was formed within the school. The school became the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences in 1987. As of 2008, the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences includes five major programs. These programs include Chemistry; Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Science; Mathematics; Physics; and Statistics.
In 1906, the Mathematics Department was founded at the North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (later North Carolina State University). In 1960, the department joined with the Chemistry, Physics, and Experimental Statistics departments to form the School of Physical Sciences and Applied Mathematics. The college currently has five major academic programs: Chemistry; Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Science; Mathematics; Physics; and Statistics. Previously, the Department of Computer Science (now located within the College of Engineering) and the Department of Biochemistry (now known as the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry and located within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences) were also components of the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. Instruction in some of these academic areas, such as chemistry and mathematics, dates back to the first years of curriculum at the university.
