Herbert Spencer Harned (1888-1969): taught chemistry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1913-1928; served in the chemical war service of the U.S. Army during World War I; from 1928-1957 professor at Yale University; from 1943-1945 group leader for the Manhattan Project; from 1950-1965 consultant for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Herbert Spencer Harned, chemist, was born on December 2, 1888, the son of Thomas Biggs and Augusta Anna (Traubel) Harned. His father was a successful lawyer and his mother an abolitionist. Both parents were close friends of Walt Whitman.
Herbert Harned received a B.A. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1909, a B.S. in 1910, and a Ph.D. in 1913. He was an instructor at the University of Pennsylvania from 1913 to 1917, an assistant professor from 1917 to 1926, and a professor from 1926 to 1928. During World War I, Harned served as a captain in the chemical war service of the U.S. Army. In 1928 Herbert Harned came to Yale and was a professor of chemistry until his retirement in 1957. From 1943 to 1945 he was a group leader for the Manhattan Project and from 1950 to 1965 served as a consultant for the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Herbert Harned died on July 29, 1969.
