This collection represents five generations of the Whiton family of Ashford and Winchendon, Mass., and Antrim, N. H. Elijah Whiton (1714-1784) was a prosperous farmer, cooper, and justice of the peace in Ashford. His son, Israel Whiton (1754-1819), became a physician and served in the Continental Army before settling in Winchendon with his wife, Dorothy Crosby Whiton (1760-1826). Their son, John Milton Whiton (1785-1856), graduated from Yale in 1805 and served as Presbyterian minister in Antrim for forty-four years. In 1808 he married Abigail Morris (1783-1865) of South Farms, Conn. Their son, James Morris Whiton (1809-1857) was a prosperous merchant in Boston and married Mary Elizabeth Knowlton (1809- ). Among their children was James Morris Whiton, Jr. (1833-1920), a Yale graduate, 1853, who earned a Yale Ph.D. in 1861, was a minister in Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York, and published various theological volumes and classical textbooks. He married Mary Eliza Bartlett (1834-1917) of New York City, while his sister, Mary Elizabeth Whiton (1836- ), married a nephew of Ichabod Washburn of Worcester, Mass.
