U.S. Provost Marshall General, Department of the Tennessee, 1862-1863; Bvt. Brigadier General; personal friend of Ulysses Grant.
Hillyer was born in Kentucky, educated in Indiana and admitted to the Indiana bar before he was 21. He practiced law and served in the Indiana Legislature. In 1855 he moved to St. Louis, Mo., where he met U. S. Grant. When the U.S. Civil War began he raised a company for the cause. Eventually he was appointed to the general staff of U. S. Grant, where he remained until 1863 when he retired to New York.
