J. Galen DeVore was born about 1878 in California according to the 1920 Federal Census for Centralia, Lewis, WA. It is possible that he is related to the founding minister of the First United Methodist Church in Olympia, WA, Rev. John F. DeVore. Rev. John F. DeVore came to the Washington Territory in 1853 and moved to Olympia, WA in 1855. Rev. DeVore and his family spent the rest of their lives in Washington State. J. Galen DeVore first shows up in the 1910 Federal Census for Centralia, Lewis, WA with his wife, Cora. His name is seen with different spellings throughout the census and the city directories. It is spelled: Galen, J. Galen, J. G., Galen J. and Galon. He is an electrician in a supply shop in 1910. Galen and Cora had only been married 4 mos. at the time of the Federal Census. By 1914 Galen is an electrician in Centralia, WA and appears to be working for himself. From about 1914-1926, Galen and Cora are running their business called DeVore Electric Works on N. Tower Ave according to the City Directory. By 1930 Galen and Cora have made some changes in their lives. They have moved to Seattle, King, WA with their 4 children: Earl, John, Lois and Beatrice.
