Biographical History

Herbert Hanauer, a dentist, was born in Karlsruhe on October 28, 1911 the son of Aron Hanauer and Lina Hanauer, née Owitz. He received his doctor's diploma on the same day he left for the United States of America, on November 27, 1936. Lucie Wolf was born as Karoline Lucie Wolf in Frankfurt am Main on March 9, 1914, the daughter of Nathan Wolf and Sara Wolf, née Adler; at some point she changed the order of her given names. By the end of 1936 Herbert and Lucie had married; in 1944 they became American citizens.

Selma Hanauer, Herbert Hanauer's sister, was born in Karlsruhe on November 16, 1907. She came to the United States in 1939 with a visitor's visa, but she would later re-enter the country. She became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1952.

Adolf Wolf, the brother of Nathan Wolf, had immigrated many years earlier to the United States. Feeling deep gratitude to his brother for earlier kindnesses, he provided affidavits for the entire family that enabled them to flee Germany. He also employed his brother and two of his nieces in his printing and dyeing business.
