Biographical History

The company was organized in 1898 as Northwest Paper Company (NPC), a Virginia, Minnesota corporation. In 1910 it was reorganized under Minnesota law as The Northwest Paper Company. The company was built and managed by Weyerhaeuser interests and operated pulping mills at Knife Falls and Brainerd in addition to its flagship plant in Cloquet. After 1928 the company became Weyerhaeuser's preeminent Minnesota operation when it acquired properties of the Northern Lumber Company, Cloquet Lumber Company, and the Johnson-Wentworth Company (operated in tandem as its Lumber Division). Northwest Paper had previously acquired the Cloquet Tie and Post Company.
