Biographical History
Mario Jose de Souza Machado, a Portuguese-Chinese descendant, was born in Shanghai, China on April 22, 1935. His father, Carlos Jacinto de Lourdes Gouveia Furtado Machado, served as a vice-chancellor for the Portuguese Consulate of Shanghai, while his mother, Maria Teresa de Sousa, was a homemaker. Machado's education before becoming a U.S. citizen includes attendance at St. John's Military Academy in Los Angeles, the British Thomas Hanbury School, St. Francis Xavier College of Shanghai, and a business college in Hong Kong. Machado became a U.S. citizen in 1965, after arriving in Seattle in 1956. He is the father of four children through his marriage with Christine D'Almada Remedios. Mario Machado was active in film, television, sports, and radio. He obtained roles in several movies including the Robocop trilogy and acted as a consultant, most recently in the 2010 documentary Shanghai Exodus. In his television appearances, Machado was a mainly a news reporter for KHJ-TT, KNXT, and CBS during the 1960s and 70s. Additionally, Machado participated as a commentator for the 1984 Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup from 1970 to 1982 throughout North America. He also contributed to other organizations on the topic of soccer including the North American Soccer League (NASL), Public Television Station (PBS), The American Soccer League, and AYSO.
