Thomas Gibbons from Savannah, Georgia was a loyalist during the American Revolution. After the war, he opened a lucrative law practice in Savannah, in addition to running the family plantation. He entered politics in 1791 and was elected mayor of Savannah, then became a federal judge for the Georgia district. In the early 1800s, Gibbons bought a summer estate in Elizabeth, New Jersey. William Gibbons, Thomas Gibbons' son, assisted his father with the family businesses. In 1832, he bought land and built a mansion in Madison, New Jersey. His son, William Heyward Gibbons, resided in Savannah, Georgia where he ran family businesses after his father's death.
