Biographical History

William Stubbs (1825-1901), the historian, bishop of Chester and afterwards of Oxford, was born at Knaresborough, and educated at Ripon Grammar School, and at Christ Church, Oxford. His chief work, The constitutional history of England, in 3 volumes, was issued in 1874-78, and at once became the standard authority on the subject. The notes on the history of Ripon Minster were compiled while he was a student at Christ Church.

From the guide to the Notes on Ripon Minster, compiled by William Stubbs, with drawings by John Whitton Darnbrough, 1842-1845, (GB 206 Leeds University Library)
