Biographical History
H.E. Thomas was a hydrologist and an expert on groundwater resources for the U.S. Geological Survey during the twentieth century. Thomas joined the U.S. Geological Survey as a field geologist in the agency's Geologic Division in 1929. He transferred to the U.S. Geological Survey's Water Resources Division in 1931 and held a number of posts in this division including Assistant to Groundwater District Chief in Salt Lake City, Utah (1935-1936); Utah Groundwater District Chief in Salt Lake City, Utah (1940-1942, 1945-1948); Groundwater Branch Area of Pacific States in Menlo Park, California (1956-1958); Staff Hydrologist in Washington, D.C. (1963-1968); and Senior Hydrologist in Los Altos, California (1974-1978). Thomas also served a number of foreign assignments in Africa, the Carribean, and the Middle East. He was also author of the book "The Conservation of Groundwater" (1951).
