Tyler was a playwright and jurist whose career included terms on the Supreme Court of Vermont (1801-1813).
American novelist, dramatist and jurist.

Royall Tyler (1757-1826) was born in Boston, Mass. He received degrees from Harvard and Yale in 1776. He became a lawyer and was named chief justice of the Vermont Supreme Court in 1807. A playwright and author, he produced the first American comedy, "The Contrast," in 1787.
Tyler married Mary Palmer (1775-1866) and they had eleven children. Mary Palmer Tyler wrote "The Maternal Physician," published in 1811, and an autobiography which was published by her descendent Helen Tyler Brown in 1925.
