Biographical History

Dr. Chris North had a position at the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (Great Britain). He was one of the founding members of the Scottish Horticultural Research Institute, where he worked from 1953 to 1977. There he was trialing and breeding vegetables for the Scottish climate; and produced the first uniform variety of cabbage in Britain. He published a book PLANT BREEDING AND HORTICULTURE (1979). North achieved international acclaim for his work on breeding virus resistant lilies. After his retirement he and his wife traveled extensively conducting plant hunts and recording the natural flora of the area around the Mediterranean and other areas. North was a good artist and an active member of the Dundee Arts Society (Scotland), where he exhibited regularly, and was well know for his landscapes.
