Biographical History

First movement commissioned by CBS for its American School of the Air series. Composed 1941. First performance over the CBS Network, New York, 8 April 1941, Columbia Concert Orchestra, Bernard Herrmann conductor. The Billings tunes in no. 2 are When Jesus Wept and Chester. Composed 1945. No. 3 commissioned by the BBC. Composed 1944. First performance on the BBC Network (I.T.M.A. program), 30 March 1944.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.
